"I Love You Philip Morris" - A unique love story
18 Jan 2009

By Priya B (Web correspondent)

Many people think there must be similarities between "I Love You Phillip Morris" and "Brokeback Mountain", since both are gay movies. But, it's not true. There is a big difference between them. LA Times has talked to director Glenn Ficarra:

Directors and longtime writing partners Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, has made their debut with "I Love You Phillip Morris". The movie is based on fact, the true-life tale of a onetime married police officer turned gay Texan con man, Steven Russell (Jim Carrey), who had a plan for breaking out of prison on Friday the 13th and passionately in love with a fellow inmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).

For this movie, Jim Carrey was their first choice to play Russell. After reading the script, Jim immediately signed the movie, explaining that there have been only three scripts that he truly felt compelled to do. "The Truman Show," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and this.

The film has a very low budget, estimated to be just $14 million. It was initially to be directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), but he dropped out to make "Milk" instead. So, Carrey agreed to let Ficarra and Requa direct the movie. The movie is financed by director Luc Besson's company EuropaCorp. The filmmakers hope to sell the domestic rights these days at the Sundance Film Festival.

EuropaCorp recently showed "I Love You Phillip Morris" to GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). They liked the movie and agreed to host the press conference at Sundance Film Festival where Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast will be attending tonight.
In a nutshell, according to Ficarra. What makes "I Love You Phillip Morris" a unique gay love story is that most gay movies with gay people are about being gay and treat being gay as this affliction. Unlike this movie that's got nothing to do with it and it's about two people in love."

Check Jim Carrey Online the next days to see photos from the World Premiere and get the first reviews. In the meantime watch the video clip of the filmmakers from the Sundance website. Click here.
