Memorable Moment: Carrey on Letterman (1994)
20 Feb 2011

By Priya Baboota (Web correspondent)

Jim Carrey made an appearance on 'The Late Show with David Letterman' in July 1994 to promote his new comedy "The Mask". He said what's responsible for his success and popularity - self motivation tapes.

Jim Carrey told Letterman that he is pissed about the tabloids because 90% of what they write is not true. He opened a tabloid which was actually Newsweek and read what they wrote about him. "Jim Carrey is reported to be making $7 Million per movie and said to be involved with "Dumb and Dumber" co-start Lauren Holly." He said it's not true because they only sleep together four or five times a week, so that means they are just good friends.

Then they talked about Jim Carrey's impressions. He said his impressions started when he used to hear whispers and voices in his head at night. Before the commercial break they both made funny impressions of Broderick Crawford from "Born Yesterday".

Letterman's experience of many persons in stand-up comedy works for years and years and just making pennies, but then all out of the sudden Jim Carrey is making big pay cheques. And asked Jim if that is kind of a pressure or a problem for him. Jim said that he is completely all right with big pay cheques. It's changed the way he laughs at parties because he is wealthy!

At the end of the interview, he showed a clip which he exclaimed was 5 years old of the intro of the CBS news magazine '60 Minutes'.
