"The Grinch" gives First Book
20 Oct 2000

Taken from Universal's press release:

Universal Studios has announced a multi-faceted partnership with First Book, a national nonprofit organization that raises awareness of children's literacy issues and distributes new books to underserved children. The partnership will launch with two special events tied to the November 17 release of Universal Pictures' and Imagine Entertainment's film version of the Random House classic book, "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas": a national First Book Day celebration on November 1; and the World Premiere on November 8 in Los Angeles.

The extent of Universal's support of First Book includes a variety of commitments, ranging from a charitable donation to community activities. In order to encourage volunteer participation across the country, Universal Pictures' official Grinch web site, www.meanone.com, will provide updated information about opportunities to support First Book children. Universal's specially designed poster, "This Wholiday Season Send a Child a Book" will be displayed at retailers and booksellers across the country.

Beginning with a press conference at the New York Public Library in New York City on November 1, First Book Day will launch a number of broad-reaching local and national activities that are designed to raise awareness of children's literacy issues and to enable people from all across the country to contribute to this program. Many of Universal's primary partners for the film will also be participating in the First Book Day launch event and subsequent campaign, including Kellogg's, Nabisco, Wendy's, Ziploc and the U.S. Postal Service.

Among the many exciting programs is a special partnership with Universal Studios and Random House Children's Books, the exclusive publisher of the works of Dr. Seuss. Random House will donate a new book to First Book for every copy of the classic Grinch or any Grinch movie tie-in book purchased throughout the holiday season. The company has pledged to donate up to half a million books.

In addition, the world premiere of "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas," to be held on November 8 in Los Angeles, will benefit First Book and BookPALS, a Program of the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. The event will be sponsored by VISA.
