Jim Carrey’s Emotional Night at the 51st César Awards
27 Feb 2026

By Tommy Pihl (Editor-in-Chief)

Last night, Jim Carrey stepped onto the stage at the 51st César Awards in Paris to receive one of French cinema’s highest honours — the Honorary César Award — celebrating his extraordinary impact on film, television and global pop culture.

The evening took place at L’Olympia, one of Paris’s historic theatres, where Jim was greeted with a standing ovation before he even spoke, a clear sign of the admiration the French film community holds for him. Jim’s moment on stage was made even more meaningful when he was introduced by Michel Gondry — the acclaimed French director who helmed "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", one of Jim’s most acclaimed dramatic performances more than two decades ago. Gondry’s introduction set the tone for a speech that was heartfelt, personal, and delivered with Jim’s trademark sincerity.

In a rare public appearance, Jim Carrey gave his acceptance speech entirely in French — a bold and deeply personal choice that drew laughter and tears alike. Speaking with a noticeable American accent but undeniable affection for the language and the moment, he crafted remarks that blended humour, gratitude, and reflection.

While a full official transcript isn’t yet published by the awarding body, we have the most important lines:

“As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire. How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.”

Jim also surprised many with a touching connection to his roots, revealing:

“About 300 years ago, my great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather, Marc-François Carré — yes, Carré — was born in Saint-Malo, in France, before emigrating to Canada. Tonight, with this magnificent honor, this square (carré in French) has come full circle.”

One of the most personal parts of Jim’s speech was when he thanked the people closest to him — right in French:

“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever.” “Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah. I love you, Min Ah.” “And finally, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known: my father, Percy Joseph Carrey, who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter.”

These heartfelt acknowledgements were met with applause and warmth from the crowd, marking a rare moment of openness from a famously private star. True to form, Jim Carrey closed his remarks with a self-aware and funny comment about delivering his speech in French:

“So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired.”

The audience responded with laughter and applause, delighted by his effort and charm. While accepting the award, Jim was joined in Paris by the family members he mentioned on stage. Daughter - Jane Erin Carrey, Grandson – Jackson, Partner – Min Ah.

This marked one of Jim’s rare public appearances with his partner and family, making the evening especially memorable for fans around the world.

The Honorary César Award is a lifetime-achievement tribute reserved for artists whose work has had a lasting influence on cinema. Previous recipients include legends such as Julia Roberts and other international luminaries. Having CJim arrey in that company underscores his unique versatility — from uproarious comedy to powerful drama — and his enduring global appeal.
