Chuck Russell Open to Returning for The Mask Sequel

More than 30 years after "The Mask" became a global box office phenomenon, director Chuck Russell has revealed in a recent interview that he would be interested in returning to the franchise, particularly if Jim Carrey is involved. Released in 1994 and based on the comic book series by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke, The Mask was a massive success for New Line Cinema. Directed by Russell and starring Jim Carrey alongside Cameron Diaz in her feature film debut, the movie earned $351.8 million worldwide against a reported budget of just $18–23 million. Adjusted for inflation, that box office haul would be worth nearly $800 million today! The film followed Stanley Ipkiss (Jim), a shy and unlucky bank teller who discovers a mysterious mask connected to the Norse trickster god Loki. Once worn, the mask transforms him into a green-faced, wisecracking force of chaos with seemingly limitless cartoon-like powers, helping establish The Mask as one of the most memorable comic book adaptations of the 1990s.
While a follow-up eventually arrived in 2005 with "Son of the Mask", the sequel was a critical and commercial disappointment. Neither Russell nor Jim returned for the project, and the franchise has remained dormant ever since. Speaking recently while promoting the upcoming 4K Blu-ray release of Eraser for its 30th anniversary, Russell addressed the possibility of revisiting The Mask.
"There's always talk about it," Russell said. "There was a sequel, don't forget there was Son of the Mask, which I avoided. They were nice enough to offer directing to me, but comedy is harder than action. The Mask has comedy and action, but it was primarily a comedy."
Russell explained that the biggest challenge in bringing The Mask back would be recapturing the delicate balance that made the original work.
"The comedy engine in these films has to be working perfectly because we can make a thriller more suspenseful. We can make an action movie bigger and broader, but comedy is tough," he said. "A sequel to The Mask is always something I'm asked about. It'd be lovely to return, but for me with Jim in particular, it would be lovely to return, but we'll see. It's not ready yet, but that's a lovely idea."
Russell's comments are particularly interesting because he isn't the only member of the original cast who has expressed openness to revisiting the franchise.

In January 2025, Cameron Diaz was asked whether she would be interested in reprising her role as Tina Carlyle, Stanley Ipkiss' love interest in the original film.
"If Jim's on board, I mean, I've been riding those coattails from day one," Diaz joked.
The actress' response delighted fans who have long hoped to see the original stars reunite. The Mask helped launch Diaz's career and remains one of her most beloved roles more than three decades later. Meanwhile, Jim Carrey himself has also left the door open to a potential return. While promoting "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" also in 2025, the actor was asked whether he would ever consider playing Stanley Ipkiss again.
"Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It's not really about the money," Jim said. "I never know. You can't be definite about these things. I said I'd like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, things tend to change."
At the moment, there are no known plans for a new Mask movie. However, the fact that Russell, Diaz, and Carrey have all publicly expressed interest under the right circumstances is likely to fuel renewed speculation among fans. For now, Stanley Ipkiss remains retired, but with the original director willing to return, Cameron Diaz ready if Carrey signs on, and Carrey himself open to the right creative pitch, the prospect of a long-awaited The Mask sequel may be more realistic than it has been in years.
